In a Pinch, Call Finch!”

Pennsylvania, US – January 13, 2025 – In the Rotary Processing Equipment (RPE) industry such as Industrial Kilns and Dryers, Finch Manufacturing is the only ISO 9001:2015 certified company and our customers return to Finch for our high-quality components and real solutions.

Does engineering support and system inspections matter?  Yes, it does.

At Finch Manufacturing, our customers know to call us immediately if something is not running properly. Whether they are seeing excess noise/vibrations, or experience a component failure, Finch Manufacturing will immediately respond and review the situation either by phone, videoconference or have an engineer on the road that day to their site.  The Finch team has a reputation for proving real solutions and doing what is necessary to get you back running in an emergency with short and long-term solutions.  In one situation, a customer was down completely, we worked the weekend to manufacture a thrust roller to get the customer back up and running within 24 hours.  These rapid and real time solutions are why we like to say, “In a Pinch, Call Finch!”

However, many customers are unaware that Finch Manufacturing offers comprehensive engineering and field service support. From designing new kiln and dryer systems to managing its installation, and providing quarterly inspections, the Finch engineering team does it all. We offer an extensive list of field services, delivered with honesty and our customer focused approach.  We will not suggest services not needed and only recommend real solutions needed to optimize your kiln’s throughput and reliability.

Bob Zinnen, CEO of Finch Manufacturing & Technology, LLC says “We offer a complete list of services and do this in a cost-effective manner.  Companies do not like paying for preventive maintenance, but ensuring alignment and optimization of your kiln saves money since it ensures a longer life of components, reduces energy costs, and the risk of unscheduled downtime. We know we produce the best RPE products, but we wanted to become a ‘one stop’ resource for our customers.”

Finch recently purchased equipment for shell thickness testing, further expanding our range of inspection services. During a recent inspection of a long-term customer’s shell, Finch identified thin areas in critical sections of their drum shell, indicating structural weakness.  Together, Finch worked with our customer and came up with a plan to replace the weakened section during their scheduled winter maintenance and prevented a possible catastrophic event.

Finch Manufacturing recommends detailed quarterly or biannual kiln inspections as part of a preventative maintenance program. Based upon best practices and our extensive experience, this program allows our engineering team to work with your team to ensure proper maintenance is being performed and your kiln or dryer’s performance is fully optimized.  The program advises your team on the true condition of your dryer helping to prioritize preventive maintenance to reduce downtime. Finch assigns a specific engineer to your site who will know all about your RPE equipment, needs, issues and will also create quotes for replacement components and repairs.  As part of Finch’s ISO 9001:2001 Quality Management Program, extensive notes or documentation are maintained, and your site is reviewed with other engineers to ensure proper coordination in the future.  Additionally, the Finch Manufacturing team will review your spare parts inventory and provide valuable input to help develop multi-year capital and maintenance budgets that include accurate budget quotes so there are no surprises. The inspection activities are:

  • Site engineering visit to perform rotary drum inspection
  • Verify dryer operating conditions during normal production (e.g. thrusting, gear noise, trunnion & tire wear, trunnion & tire alignment, tire mounting, seal leaks, etc.)
  • Review dryer performance and concerns with plant personnel
  • Inspect surface conditions of trunnions, tires, tire mounting, thrust rollers, seals and gears as accessible
  • Shell skin thickness testing provided at no cost for quarterly inspection customers
  • Provide a written report of our findings and recommendations
  • Conference call to review report and findings

Finch Manufacturing also offers complete project management on all sizes of projects. For large projects this allows you to focus on your core operations while ensuring your project is completed on-time, under budget and meets your expectation on its operation.  For smaller projects, our customers often request engineering support and guidance, with the option of utilizing Finch-provided labor or their in-house team for tasks such as:

  • Trunnion and Thrust Roller Replacement
  • Rotary Kiln and Dryer Tire & Mounting Installation or Repairs
  • Base Frame Installation
  • Trunnion & Thrust Roller Bearing Replacement
  • Spur & Pinion Gear Installation

The Finch team also provides other services such as:

  • Grind and alignment services – critical to ensure kiln optimization and extend the life of your tires, trunnions and gears
  • Design and Installation of Auto-Lubrication Systems
  • Refurbishing of Trunnions and Thrust rollers
  • General RPE Education and Maintenance Training Course

Mike Brown, COO of Finch Manufacturing & Technology, LLC says “Your assigned Finch engineer is there to work with you on field service needs to designing your replacement trunnions and base frame.  We ask our customers to contact us immediately if they perceive a problem.  Waiting too long often leads to increase in downtime and repair costs.”
