Affordable supersonic travel is coming soon

Washington, DC – February 10, 2025 –  Boom Achieves Supersonic Flight. The first civil supersonic jet made in America breaks the sound barrier in historic Mojave airspace.” Here is a simple statement on the website of Boom, a relatively small American company, based in Denver, Colorado and Greensboro, North Carolina. Boom was created with the goal of building Overture, a supersonic passenger aircraft that will make business sense for passengers and for the airlines that will buy it and operate it. Imagine this: for the price of a business class ticket, you will be able to fly from Paris to Boston in half the time.

For sure, supersonic flight is not news. American companies have been making state of the art supersonic airplanes for decades. But those are military jets, built on government contracts for the U.S. Air Force. Until now, no U.S. corporation seriously tried to manufacture a passenger jet that would travel at supersonic speed. The problem was and is the exorbitant operating costs of supersonic airplanes that would make it impossible for any airline to make money flying them.

The Concorde came and went

In the 1970s France and the United Kingdom tried this. Their joint efforts produced the Concorde, a beautifully designed, sleek supersonic marvel that could fly well-heeled passenger from London to New York in only three and a half hours. For a while, Concorde was touted as a symbol of European technological prowess. Yes, back then, America had Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, and Lockheed. But Europe had a supersonic airliner that could travel at twice the speed of sound.

Wonderful. Except that the Concorde from its very beginning was a commercial disaster, even though Air France and British Airways kept flying the money losing airliner as a matter of national pride. The problem was the enormous consumption of expensive jet fuel. It was clear that Concorde was a wonderful aircraft, but really bad for business. Then there was an unfortunate crash in July 2000. And that was the end of the Concorde era. Its last flight from New York to London was on October 24, 2003.

Boom promises affordable supersonic travel

And now Boom wants to be back in the supersonic game. Here is the company website: “Boom Supersonic founder and CEO Blake Scholl said, “XB-1’s supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for passenger supersonic flight has arrived. A small band of talented and dedicated engineers has accomplished what previously took governments and billions of dollars. Next, we are scaling up the technology on XB-1 for the Overture supersonic airliner. Our ultimate goal is to bring the benefits of supersonic flight to everyone.”

Here we have it: democratize supersonic travel. In the Concorde era it was a luxury, only for the super-rich. The January Boom XB-1 supersonic flight was a milestone; but only proof of concept, using a small airplane. The next and much more challenging task is building Overture, a supersonic passenger airplane. This jetliner will carry 64-80 passengers, versus 100 on the old Concorde. Boom is developing its own engine called “Symphony” for the brand new airliner. Milestones are being met. However, progress so far is no guarantee of eventual success. The challenge is to make a truly fuel efficient aircraft that will make money for the airlines.

A new era for business travel

That said, there is keen commercial interest in this new supersonic jetliner. Boom estimates that with a range of 4,250 miles Overture can be used by airlines for about 600 profitable routes. The company claims to have 130 orders and preorders, as well as alliances with American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

In the end, Boom CEO Scholl believes that it is technically possible to create a new supersonic travel era in which for the cost of a business class ticket millions of people will be able to get to their destinations in half the time. If Overture will be a fuel efficient supersonic airliner, we can expect a revolution in business travel, and also in the way international business relations are conducted, and a lot more.

Wasserqualität zwischen Krise und Innovation

Mainz, Deutschland – 10. Februar 2025 – Am 4. Februar 2025 hat die EU-Kommission einen Bericht zur Wasserqualität in Europa veröffentlicht – die Ergebnisse sind erschreckend. Nur 39,5 % der Oberflächengewässer befinden sich in einem guten ökologischen Zustand, und der chemische Zustand ist noch schlechter: Nur 26,8 % der Gewässer erreichen hier eine gute Bewertung. Besonders alarmierend ist die Situation in Deutschland: 99 % der Oberflächengewässer sind chemisch belastet, und 71 % leiden unter landwirtschaftlichen Einleitungen. Die EU fordert Deutschland daher auf, seine Anstrengungen zur Reduzierung der Gewässerverschmutzung erheblich zu verstärken.

Diese Zahlen zeigen, dass wir mehr tun müssen. Unsere Flüsse, Seen und Meere sind in einem kritischen Zustand – und das hat weitreichende Konsequenzen.

Wasserverschmutzung: eine Gefahr für Umwelt, Mensch und Klima
Die Folgen der Gewässerschädigung sind gravierend. 

Plastikmüll, Schwermetalle und Pestizide bedrohen die Artenvielfalt. Jährlich sterben Millionen Meeresvögel und hunderttausende Meeressäuger, weil sie Plastik mit Nahrung verwechseln oder sich in alten Fischernetzen verfangen. Mikroplastik und Giftstoffe gelangen in die Nahrungskette und gefährden nicht nur die Tierwelt, sondern auch uns Menschen.

Zusätzlich spielt die Wasserqualität eine entscheidende Rolle im Klimaschutz. Verunreinigte und gestörte Gewässer emittieren verstärkt Treibhausgase wie Kohlendioxid, Methan und Lachgas. Besonders betroffen sind trockengefallene Flussbetten oder verschmutzte Seen, die zu erheblichen Methanemissionen beitragen. Die Renaturierung von Gewässern kann hingegen helfen, Treibhausgase zu binden und die Klimabilanz zu verbessern.

Die gute Nachricht

Es gibt bereits vielversprechende Technologien, die unsere Gewässer effektiv schützen und reinigen können. Diese innovativen Methoden müssen dringend weiterentwickelt und großflächig eingesetzt werden:

  • Autonome Schwimmroboter

Diese Roboter können in allen küstennahen Gewässern, Kanälen und Flüssen eingesetzt werden, um Plastik und andere Verunreinigungen zu entfernen. Erfolgreiche Einsätze gab es bereits in Bremen, Rotterdam, Dubai und vielen Häfen, wo große Mengen an Müll abgefangen wurden, bevor sie ins offene Meer gelangen konnten. Zukünftig könnten solche Systeme mit KI-gestützter Navigation ausgestattet werden, um effizienter auf Schadstoffquellen zu reagieren.
  • Nanobubbler-Technologie
    Diese Technologie wurde von der Firma Moleaer entwickelt und ist seit 2017 kommerziell erhältlich. Sie nutzt mikroskopisch kleine Sauerstoffblasen, die durch ihre geringe Größe tiefer ins Wasser eindringen und dort den Sauerstoffgehalt deutlich erhöhen. Dies hilft, schädliche anaerobe Prozesse zu verhindern, die zu Sauerstoffmangel und Fischsterben führen. Besonders in überdüngten Gewässern, die durch landwirtschaftliche Nährstoffeinträge aus dem EU-Bericht als besonders gefährdet eingestuft wurden, kann die Nanobubbler-Technologie effektiv eingesetzt werden. Sie wurde bereits erfolgreich in Kläranlagen und Aquakulturen genutzt, um Wasserqualität und Biodiversität zu verbessern.
  • Biologische Filteranlagen und Phytoremediation
    Diese Methode wird seit Jahrzehnten erforscht, insbesondere von Umweltinstituten in Deutschland und den USA. Sie nutzt bestimmte Pflanzen und Mikroorganismen, um Schwermetalle und Giftstoffe auf natürliche Weise abzubauen, ohne zusätzliche chemische Mittel einzusetzen. Erfolgreiche Projekte gibt es etwa in der Lausitz, wo mit Schilfpflanzen belastete Bergbaugewässer gereinigt werden. Die Zukunftsperspektive liegt in der gezielten Anpassung von Pflanzenarten zur effizienteren Schadstoffaufnahme.
  • Mobile Filteranlagen
    Unternehmen wie Xylem und Veolia Water haben seit den 2000er-Jahren mobile Filtersysteme entwickelt, die an strategischen Punkten platziert werden können, um akute Verschmutzungen einzudämmen und die Wasserqualität gezielt zu verbessern. In Katastrophengebieten wurden diese bereits eingesetzt, um nach Hochwasserereignissen verunreinigtes Trinkwasser aufzubereiten. Die Weiterentwicklung konzentriert sich auf energieeffiziente und modular anpassbare Systeme.

Diese Innovationen zeigen, dass der technologische Fortschritt uns Lösungen bietet.
Wir müssen sie nur konsequent fördern und umsetzen.

Trotz aller alarmierender Fakten bleibt die Tatsache bestehen, dass besonders die Union und Klimawandelleugner ambitionierte Gesetze zum Schutz unserer Gewässer blockieren.
Die Wasserrahmenrichtlinie (WRRL) der EU setzte ursprünglich das Jahr 2015 als Frist für die Erreichung eines guten ökologischen und chemischen Zustands aller Gewässer. Deutschland hat jedoch die Möglichkeit zur Fristverlängerung nahezu vollständig ausgereizt und verpasst es weiterhin, entschlossen zu handeln.
Dieses zögerliche Vorgehen zeigt deutlich, dass die Union den Gewässerschutz nicht ernst genug nimmt.
Notwendige Reformen und Investitionen in Renaturierungsmaßnahmen sowie effektive Maßnahmen zur Reduktion von Schadstoffeinträgen bleiben aus oder werden nur halbherzig umgesetzt.
Während andere Länder ambitionierte Programme zur Wiederherstellung von Gewässern auf den Weg bringen, hält Deutschland an veralteten Strukturen fest und gefährdet damit die ökologischen Grundlagen unserer Wassersysteme. Den Beweis dafür liefert der EU-Bericht zur Wasserqualität vom 04.02.2025.

Doch es gibt keine Alternative:

  • Strengere Regulierungen für Industrie und Landwirtschaft, um Schadstoffeinleitungen drastisch zu reduzieren.
  • Massive Investitionen in innovative Wasserreinigungstechnologien und Renaturierungsprojekte.
  • Ein Verbot hochgiftiger Chemikalien, die Gewässer langfristig belasten.

Bürger müssen politischen Druck aufbauen.
Durch Wahlentscheidungen, Petitionen und die Unterstützung nachhaltiger Unternehmen.

Denn der Schutz unserer Gewässer ist nicht nur eine ökologische Notwendigkeit, er birgt auch wirtschaftliche Potenziale. Innovationen zur Wasserreinigung können eine Vorreiterrolle für europäische Unternehmen schaffen. Startups und Forschungseinrichtungen arbeiten an neuen Technologien, die nicht nur unser Wasser sauber halten, sondern auch als Exportschlager weltweit gefragt sein könnten.

Die Zahlen des EU-Berichts sind erneut ein Weckruf. 

Es gibt Lösungen. Wasserschutz ist Klimaschutz und zugleich eine wirtschaftliche Chance. 

Die eigentliche Herausforderung sehe ich auch darin, Wasserverschmutzung und Umweltzerstörung von vornherein zu verhindern. 

Paludikulturen, die durch nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung von Feuchtgebieten Emissionen reduzieren, sind ein Beispiel für präventive Maßnahmen, die langfristig umweltfreundlicher und wirtschaftlich sinnvoller sind als reine Schadensbegrenzung. 

Wir brauchen klare politische Entscheidungen, technologische Innovationen und die Bereitschaft jedes Einzelnen, Verantwortung zu übernehmen.
