Make the Replacement Dryer More Efficient
The Finch Manufacturing team worked very closely with the customer to design and build a replacement 72” OD x 33’ long, more efficient dryer in a very short timeline due to the condition of the older drum. This was a turnkey project with Finch Manufacturing managing the whole process from the upgraded design and fabrication to install and startup support.
Mike Brown, COO of Finch Manufacturing & Technology, LLC says “Our team loves these projects. A dedicated Finch Project Engineer worked on this project from start to finish and coordinated everything with the customer from the design enhancements to the shorter lead-time options due to the highly rushed nature of this project. The Finch Manufacturing Project Engineer also manages the install and start up!”
Our Engineering Quality control process started on the initial phone call, through the site visit, and leads every aspect of our design and manufacturing process. Asking the right questions with the customer about what is truly needed, what worked, and what could be better are important. If there is an issue, replacing the exact part is not a good idea. For this project, the design was required to fit on the existing base frame and in the existing hoods due to the short time frame and capital constraints.
The Finch Manufacturing team built this modernized dryer out of A36 steel, 2 floating pad tire mounting systems, and an AR400 abrasion resistant, bolt-in liner. The Finch team also designed custom flighting to help protect the dryer in the burner zone. Finch also modernized the drive system by converting from a spur gear to a sprocket and chain drive with an adjustable base for chain tensioning. This design change required confirming drive HP, torque, and drive ratios.
The Finch Team modernized the base frames by retrofitting them with custom trunnion pedestals to use modern pillow block bearings that were required to fit on the existing base frames and meet the original centerline height of the drum. This unit came with Finch’s 15” diameter x 7” forged and hardened Trunnions and our 14” Thrust Rollers. As protocol, Finch’s base frames are machined to ensure the bearings are in plane for maximized bearing life.
A Finch Manufacturing engineer managed the installation of this improved drum and provided the startup support as well as the associated training to ensure a quick and efficient install and operation.
Bob Zinnen, CEO of Finch Manufacturing & Technology, LLC says “Finch Manufacturing excels at these modernized replacement drums due to our experience, knowledge, vast manufacturing capabilities, and dedication. Our engineers take great pride in making the drum more efficient and reliable. Improving our customers operations is a critical component of our philosophy and we make this happen on-time and on budget”
